History

The slogan “Slam Dunk the Junk” as the theme of the state of New Jersey’s litter prevention campaign originated in the great city of East Orange. Previously, the slogan “Slam Dunk the Junk” has been used in various forms in America as well as internationally as part of litter prevention and/or recycling programs for almost thirty years. At least two major U.S. cities have used the theme in conjunction with litter prevention projects and one American university has included a “Slam Dunk the Junk” litter prevention activity for kids in a family event. Globally, several nations have used a variation of the slogan, one in conjunction with an international basketball team and a country wide litter prevention/recycling drive. Overseas, one company has offered a ‘Slam Dunk the Junk’ poster. And at least one school has had a “Slam Dunk the Junk” theme for its annual litter prevention clean up drive. Then, in 2007, a New Jersey student used the term in a speech. It was then adopted by the New Jersey Clean Communities Council as its official slogan.
